Let’s be real: A safari isn't cheap. Between the park entrance fees, the jeep rental, and the tips, your wallet takes a hit before you even see your first elephant.

But here is the good news your food budget can be practically non-existent if you know where to look.

Sri Lanka is one of the most affordable culinary destinations in the world. In a rural town like Udawalawe, you can eat like a king three square meals, snacks, and drinks for less than $10 USD (approx. 3,000 LKR) per person, per day. You just have to be willing to skip the hotel buffet and eat where the locals eat.

Here is your realistic blueprint for a full day of eating on a backpacker’s budget.

Breakfast: The $1.50 Start (String Hoppers or Paratha)

Skip the "Continental Breakfast" at your guesthouse ($5-$8). Instead, walk out to the main road by 7:30 AM.

What to Order:

  • String Hoppers (Indi Appa): Steamed rice flour noodles pressed into small nests. You usually order them by the count (e.g., 10 string hoppers). They come with Kiri Hodi (coconut milk gravy) and Pol Sambol (spicy coconut).
  • Paratha/Roti: Flatbread served with a side of dhal curry.

The Cost: A full serving of 10 string hoppers or 3 parathas with curry will cost you roughly 400 – 600 LKR ($1.30 – $2.00). Add a "Plain Tea" (black tea with sugar) for 50 LKR ($0.15).

Lunch: The Power of the "Packet" ($1.50 - $2.50)

Lunch is the main meal in Sri Lanka. If you sit down at a "Tourist Restaurant," you will pay 1500+ LKR. But if you go to a "Bath Kade" (Rice Shop), you save big.

The Secret: Ask for a "Rice Packet" (takeaway). Even if you plan to eat it nearby, the pre-wrapped lunch packets are often cheaper and portioned more generously than the "serve yourself" buffet plates.

What you get: A mountain of rice (Red or White), one piece of protein (Fish, Chicken, or Egg), dhal, and 3-4 vegetable curries wrapped in a banana leaf or lunch sheet.

The Cost:

  • Vegetable Rice Packet: 350 – 450 LKR ($1.20)
  • Fish/Chicken Rice Packet: 500 – 800 LKR ($1.70 – $2.60)

Dinner: The Kottu Symphony ($2.50 - $4.00)

As the sun sets, the "Chopping" begins. Listen for the rhythmic clack-clack-clack of metal blades on metal griddles. This is Kottu Roti, the ultimate Sri Lankan street food.

What is it? Godamba Roti (flatbread) is chopped up on a hot plate with vegetables, egg, meat, and curry gravy. It is heavy, greasy, spicy, and incredibly filling.

The Cost: A massive portion of Chicken or Cheese Kottu (often enough to share between two light eaters) will cost between 1000 – 1500 LKR ($3.30 – $5.00). A Vegetable Kottu is even cheaper, around 800 LKR.

Snacks & Hydration: Flinging the Change

Throughout the day, you will need to hydrate and snack.

  • King Coconut (Thambili): 150 – 250 LKR ($0.50 - $0.80).
  • Short Eats (Fish Rolls/Samosas): 100 – 150 LKR ($0.30 - $0.50) each.
  • 1.5L Water Bottle: 150 LKR ($0.50) at a supermarket (more at hotels).

How to Spot a Budget Gem

How do you know if a restaurant is "Local Price" or "Tourist Price"?

The Furniture: Plastic chairs usually mean local prices. Wooden chairs with cushions usually mean tourist prices.

The Menu: Look for a chalkboard on the wall with prices written in chalk. If they hand you a laminated menu in English with dollar signs, walk away.

The Crowd: If the jeep drivers are eating there, the food is good and the price is right.

The Grand Total

Let’s do the math for one person:

  • Breakfast: 500 LKR ($1.60)
  • Lunch: 700 LKR ($2.30)
  • Dinner: 1200 LKR ($4.00)
  • Water/Snack: 400 LKR ($1.30)

Total: 2,800 LKR (approx. $9.20 USD)

So, save your money for the safari jeep your stomach will be just as happy with the $10 budget plan.
